On the hill behind A Famosa (the old fort), are the ruins of St. Paul’s Church. The church was originally a Portuguese chapel (1521). In 1548 the Archbishop of Goa in India handed over the church to the Catholic Society of Jesus. St. Francis Xavier, the pioneering Catholic missionary of Southeast Asia, received the title deeds.
