Another Air Insertion

Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam

There is little doubt that this was the preferred way for our infantry units to insert
into a new operational area. Often, it was the only way. Flights of 10 or 20 UH
'choppers' would quickly transport us to new locations, and build up the strength
on the ground very quickly - maybe 70-140 at each lift. There were hot insertions,
cold insertions, and the 'who knows' category. I was in favour of the cold insertions,
although as I recall we didn't get to choose. Mostly, it was OK. Sometimes it wasn't.

No, you never knew. It was so peaceful and beautiful when you were in the air and then the gunners would open up as you approached the LZ and you were dragged back into the war. You never knew what you would encounter. Again, a great photo that speaks to those of us who were there. V

Takes me back ... every time I hear a helicopter beating overhead, my thoughts go back to Vietnam. I'm certain it's the same for you ...
