At 'Apple Orchard'

Phouc Tuy Province, South Vietnam

Best viewed in Original size

An Infantry group waiting for deployment into a battle zone. Apart from the fact that
this image shows quite a few of my infantry platoon 'back in the day', I think that the
most noticeable feature is that most of the party is 'lost in thought'. This was very
common, in my experience, before an insertion into a battle area. Some engaged
in light and jovial chat ( often to hide anxiety), but most were quietly thinking of the letter
they had just mailed, or the sea trunk they had just packed, "in case" they did not return.

As you said elsewhere, "the calm before the storm". They knew what could happen, faced their own mortality, and did it over and over again. They (and you) were heroes, every one. Bless them all.
