Ohio in the Winter

It’s beautiful. I love it here so much. What’s great is that we can have three weeks of cloudy days but then we get a beautiful day like this. The sun is shining….such a beautiful day.

Sorry I took this picture from the car. Kind of lazy, I know. I just wanted to show you that we have beautifully sunny days in winter here. What you CAN’T see is the sustained 25 mph winds. You also can’t see that the temperature is 7 degrees. While 7 degrees is bad by itself, the windchill was -21 degrees. Fabulous. I love Ohio.

The most fun of the day definitely came as countless cars broke down on the highway, prompting me to get out of my car. 20 seconds. That’s how long you could be out of your car before something started hurting. Your face, your fingers, something. I just don’t get it. What is so important that you have to go out on a day like this? There were cars breaking down with kids in the car. Kids wearing nothing more than a coat. I have two temperature probes in my cruiser that monitor the temperature for Sinta. I stopped to get gas and the temperature in my car was 71 degrees. In the time it took me to get gas the temperature in my car dropped to 51 degrees. That was in what, five minutes? Now imagine being broke down on the side of the highway, at night, with no one around and your kids in the car. You can’t get out and walk. If you stay, your car will be well below freezing within minutes. All this so you could go to the mall. If you’re lucky, I’m not busy and can come help you. If you aren’t, I hope you’re prepared.

When it’s this cold outside, just stay home. One day won’t kill you. Going out could. It’s just not worth it. Trust me, if I could have stayed home I would have.

Someone has to come rescue all of the people on the side of the road though.

Good for you, Jim! I seldom get out of the car (or open the window for that matter) Last winter we started to drive to Prairie to do some shopping, sunny day but cold (it's winter in WI), got about 2 miles of a 33 mile trip and I noticed some ice on the other side of the road, turned around at the first driveway we came to, there was nothing we needed that bad that I was chancing some slick driving on the return trip about 4 hours later. The weather can change in hours and why risk it.

We were cold again today and we also had the strong winds and we have lots of snow. I saw two accidents on the expressway while I was out today. Both involved vehicles that were up to their windows in snow in the medians, facing the wrong way. I'm betting they got caught in the snow on the edge of the road and because they were driving too fast they got sucked in. For all their hurrying, they ended up spending way more time going nowhere than if they slowed down and drove reasonable for the conditions.

but, but, but .. I had to go to work, officer ;)

Yeah, I'd feel sorry for you but ... well, you know the story. Double that temp and you have us. BUT luckily we missed the snow storms that hit downstate Michigan.

I love the sun in the winter - so beautiful. But you know that means SO COLD!

Thank you for doing the job you do, you deserve a lot of praise! I am one of those people that stay in if the weather is too bad. I figure if I had to pay auto or medical deductible, it's just not worth going to work.

Colder than 40?? Ok, Carrie, you and your SC weather can kiss my frostbitten cheeks. ;)

Yea, we're gonna be packing lots of blankets and gear for our trip to grandmothers house. That's a 4hr drive, and I'm puckered the whole way there, worried that something will happen to the van.

I hope there's an "Officer Larkin" in WI if I need one.

Wow. Yeah, even tho we don't have those extreme temps here in the south, if it's colder than 40, or even raining, we stay in.

Hopefully you will have some much needed time off for the Christmas Holiday, so that you can "keep right" and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies with your 4 princess's.
