Sahara Desert, near Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008

The Sahara here is flat and rocky, the sky is filled with small clouds laden with moisture, and the horizon seems to stretch forever. I made this vista with a 24mm wideangle lens, which magnifies the sweep of both sky and land. The early morning sun warms the image, adding a surreal quality to the scene.

Thanks for pointing out the four elements that go into the making of any image of substance, Jenene: the subject itself, the effects of nature upon it, the qualities offered by the lens and camera, and the choices the photographer simultaneously makes in light, time, and space. All four are present here, as you note.

The desert colors share themselves with that dramatic sky. Enhanced by the painterly Leica and the photographer's vision.

You are so right, Tim -- this image would have never expressed the awesome sweep of the great desert without those amazing clouds. IMy 24mm wideangle lens includes much in terms of sheer space, yet it also fills the image with dramatic patterns, textures, and colors.

I think that we were lucky to have dramatic skies during our journey. Here you give us a unique, virtually duneless, view of the Sahara.

Nature made the sky, and I made the horizon look ever wider to the eye by using a 24mm wideangle lens on this shot, Alina.
