Capitol Gorge was part of The Blue Dugway and was the main passage through Capitol Reef from about 1884 to 1962
when Utah Hwy 24 was built. Turn-of-the-century travelers passed through Capitol Gorge, as did the Fremont
Indians before them. According to legend, Butch Cassidy (Robert L. Parker), an outlaw, train robber and
member of the Hole-in-the-Wall gang, had a hideout in Grand Wash, not far from Capitol Gorge.
