Red-throated Bee-eater (Merops bullocki) colony

Bansang

This is a cracking place in which to spend a half day birding. Birders visiting Bansang tend to stay on one of the camps (Baobolong camp or Bird Safari Camp) on Janjangbureh island.
Unfortunately it is difficult to get off the island at first light and the road from the ferry to Bansang is poor so it is exceedingly difficult to get to the quarry before the sun is overhead making good
photography difficult.
Similarly visiting in the late afternoon risks missing the last ferry back on to Janjangbureh. If photography is your primary objective then I would suggest getting your guide to negotiate a 'deal' with the ferryman ......... £7 (ten euros) in Gambian dalasi should do the trick & will be money well-spent.
