Flightless Weka

Point Foulwind, NZ

The weka is one of several species of flightless birds in New Zealand. They developed over millions of years with no natural predators until the arrival of Polynesians (the Maori) who were the first human settlers. Consequently these birds have no natural fear of humans and will approach quite closely if one sits reasonably still.
