So how did this happen?

Fireworks over Central NY

This boy and some of his friends were hitting a beach ball back and forth. I had hoped to catch the ball just over the boys head as he hit it...obviously that didn't happen. But when this came out of the camera and I looked at it, it looked to me like the boy was put in the picture after the fact. Look at the shadow under the fingers of the hand that is in the air and along the forearm, not likely places to have that kind of a shadow. The only thing I have done to this photo is resize and sign it, so can someone tell me how I got that shadowing? Any help appreciated.

What you are calling shadow is motion blur.

I know what you mean. I had one like that when I shoy my wedding.

Because there was enough ambient light, part of the image was recorded before or after the flash went off. It looks like a drop shadow but it's actually an underexposed hand. The flash caught the arm when it had moved slightly from the original position.
