8/6/08 - A Damsel (not in distress)

I was surprised at how close this damselfly allowed me to get. I started from several feet away with a tele-zoom lens. This image is with my 1:1 105 mm macro lens at its minimum focus distance of about 12" (which put the end of the lens much closer than that). Same experience as when I used to "stalk" the resident blue heron - take a shot, edge a step closer, take another shot, edge another step closer,..... and if you're slow & patient enough the critters may allow you to get much closer than if you just went right up to them. This is just about life sized and is fairly sharp (sharper than this web reduced version shows).

other sizes: small medium original auto
