These seals were blissfully unaware that a lean and hungry Polar Bear was approaching from the hillside behind. We did not wait to see the outcome but it would be unlikely that the bear could get close enough without the seals taking flight. Once in the water, the bear would not be able to catch them.
Common Seals are actually very uncommon in Svalbard. The earlier retreating sea ice may be encouraging them to move north.
