Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur

(varecia variegata)
This is a particularly handsome species with striking black and white body fur and long hair forming a continuous white 'ruff' around the cheeks and under the chin. It is found in lowland and mid altitude primary rain forest but it is uncommon throughout its range. We encountered these animals in Mantadia NP but unfortunately did not get great views of them as they stayed high in the trees and were mobile. This was probably due to the presence nearby of a mating pair of Fosa.
