Black Scoter

(melanitta americana)
The Black Scoter is a very common sea duck which is found in large numbers off the coast of Japan in winter. It is a winter migrant with its summer breeding range being further north. It is very similar to the Common Scoter (melanitta negra) of the Western Palearctic but the adult drake can be easily distinguished by the shape and extent of the yellow colour on the upper mandible.
