The old beacon was built in 1789 on Dennis Head, the most north easterly point of the island. However, it proved unsatisfactory and in 1806 the light was transferred to Start Point on the nearby island of Sanday. The beacon and the adjacent ruined cottages featured recently on the BBC television program 'Restoration'. Whilst it did not win the top award it is hoped that some money may be available for partial restoration. View from Linklet Bay.
