I am not certain, but I think this is the caterpiller of the Drinker Moth. Although the caterpillars are quite large and impressive, the moth itself is a plain brown colour with a wingspan of up to 70mm. It is found throughout the Uk in woodland breaks and edges, meadows, parks and gardens.
