The taxonomy of the Stonechats remains unresolved. The current African field guides refer to this as Common Stonechat (saxicola torquata) but birds south of the Sahara may be regarded as a distinct species African Stonechat. Further, the bird in this photograph is the black-breasted Ethiopian race (saxicola torquata albofasciatus) which some regard as being good for a full species split.
