I recently acquired an HTC Desire HD smartphone which, like all modern phones, has a built in camera - in this case an 8 Megapixel one. The photos in this gallery are some test landscape images taken with the phone camera. As can be seen they are of much inferior quality to similar view scenes taken with the Canon DSLR and are also much poorer than ones taken with my Kyocera Contax U4R which is only a 3 megapixel camera. The Contax does though have a Carl Zeiss lens. I suppose that should not unexpected as a phone is a phone and a camera is a camera.
The image quality from the phone is likely to be fine for casual use, anyone used to the image quality from a DSLR will be disappointed.
The problem with the HTC images seems to be that it chooses to focus on the nearest objects in the view even if they are off centre so it is pretty much useless for landscape shots. It probably will be fine for closer shots of people. If all you want is some shots of friends to upload to Facebook you will find the HTC image quality to be perfectly OK.
