The location where we saw the Yellow-headed Picathartes was a cave, or an overhanging rock face, about 2 km into a forested area. We picked up a local guide from the village at the end of the track. The forest in this area is far from pristine - there has been felling in the past and there is encroachment from farmed areas. In fact we could hear a chain saw working some distance away as we waited by the nest site. It is surprising that the Picathartes can be found in such an accessible and damaged area. The appearance of the cave has been trashed by the Ghanaian wildlife staff painting numbers by each of the nest cups.
