Trongsa

Trongsa is the principal town of central Bhutan with a history dating back to the 16th century. It is the ancestral home of Bhutan's Royal family. Tradition has it that the crown prince must first be penlop (governor) of Trongsa before he can acceed to the throne.
Trongsa Dzong sits in a stunning commanding position over the gorge of the Mangde Chhu and is the most spectacularly sited dzong in Bhutan. More of the older buildings remain intact as compared with say Punakha Dzong giving a more historic and authentic feel. If you only ever visit one dzong in Bhutan this should be the one.
We actually visited Trongsa twice for overnight stays. Once on the way south to Shemgang and Tingtibi then returning from there before heading over the hills to Bumthang. On our first arrival we eagerly headed for the Yangkhil Resort Hotel. After spendng the previous 4 nights camping we were anticipating hot water, baths, lights etc only to find that there was no electrcity. A bath in a bucket is not the same - sigh.
