Ailsa Craig

Ailsa Craig is a granite rock island in the Firth of Clyde lying about 15 km offshore from Girvan. It is the remant core of an ancient volcano. At a height of 338 metres it dominates the approaches to the Clyde Estuary. In the past it was famous for the production of curling stones.
For a number of years now it has been designated as a nature reserve managed by SNH. From a birding point of interest it is most important for its Northern Gannet colony which currently holds over 27,000 pairs.A program to eradicate the rat population has resulted in the return to the island of Puffins which had been absent for many years.
I had a day trip to the island in August 2008 with the Glasgow Natural History Society.
