Kevin, Always use the correct oil grade for your bike and always use an oil for a bike. Never use a car oil if it has friction modifiers. The thicker oil means your engine has to work harder to go the same speed (mpg drop) friction modifiers cause your clutch to slip (higher reves + mpg drop).

Can synthetic/semi-synthetic oil be used in a 86 virago 1100.

The new filters are probably to blame, too much resistance to air through put. Get the real ones from a dealer and not aftermarket ones. Try riding for a bit without filters and i'm sure you will notice the difference first.

recently I replaced the plugs and air filter in my 1993 xv750. The bike now seems a bit "throatier" in the exhaust sound (which is fine by me)and my gas mileage has suddenly dropped about 8-9 mpg. (to about 35 mpg) Power and acceleration all seem unchanged. a slight increase in rpms at highway speeds has been noticed also. Repair shop says it's not the valves, they replaced the oil with a heavier grade and the carbs were cleaned about 4000 miles ago. what did I do to my bike!!!! thanks
