Post Sunset Depression

Findhorn, Moray, Scotland.

I have always maintained that Moray has some of the best sunsets anywhere in the UK and on this particular evening it was wonderful. This is actually an hour after sunset about 10.45pm on a late May evening. Despite the title, which is obviously a play on words, a play on every word in fact, I cant imagine a less depressing scene. The smooth tonal transition from blue to red and the sweeping curves and bowls was a sheer delight to my eyes. Tis a pity the group I was instructing decided to return so soon after sunset. This is probably my favourite this year.

Yes,Ian this is one of my favorite too. Some people see it as a fine mood shot, I will rather see it as a surreal picture. You are pretty good in turning a sunset into a extraterrestrial landscape.

My eye is pulled pretty strongly to the bright edge along the shore. The sea at that point of interest starts to turn into a void with the very long exposure; thus losing some of the sense of place. Depending on one's preferences I suppose that is either a good/bad thing. Personally I'd prefer to have more presense with a bit more detail in the sea to differentiate it a bit more from the sky (unless one is trying to reveal something in the water which isn't the case here). I'm guessing that it would be a much better effect as a big print on a wall rather than the limited sized web image. In any case, it is a fine mood shot and the light on the sea at that hour is magical when it turns to silver.

This really is a special scene it just oozes mood and feeling. I like the way the sunset is given a chance because there is forground interest which holds my attention to the picture longer. Allowing the mood to flow. The two work well together, I have seen lots of sunsets and there always needs to be something more than just sky colours.
This has so much punch its stunning. Just look at the glowing red edge of the depression
and sweep and texture. Yes even when the suns gone theres still a scene to capture. Excellent work.

You are spot on...the light, once the sun goes down, can be truly magical....as you portray so superbly here. The green seaweed on the stump really sets it off. ~V~
