On a misty October dawn I hauled myself out of bed and made my way to St Marks Square where several gondolas were moored, tied up to posts and nodding in the morning breeze. I knew the posts would stay completely still and therefore sharply defined but the boats would blur with the rocking motion if I chose an appropriate exposure the fact that visibility was poor actually helped as the backdrop is uniform and doesn't distract from those wonderful blue boats.
