Peru is a country that is likely to live up to your expectations and probably exceed them. It is hard not to fall in love with the Andes – incredible landscapes, wonderful high-altitude light, fascinating pre-Columbian remains, and delightful people everywhere you travel. The cities hold some interest, too, although it's easy to overdose somewhat on Colonial Catholicism, given that there is not much else to see there. High spots include Machu Picchu, of course, but also the stupendous Colca Canyon, the magically located ruins above Pisac in the Sacred Valley, the chullpas of Sillustani overlooking the beautiful Lake Umayo, cruising past the 4,000m peaks on Titicaca, and chugging down the lush Vilcanota River on the train to Cuzco.
And so much else besides! You'll likely meet some very interesting people along the way, sample some delightful new foods, and add to your knowledge of pre-Columbian cultures and the history of modern-day Peru – especially if, like mine, your knowledge is sketchy to start with…
