Welcombe Hills and Clopton Park Nature Reserve

Just on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon:
an outstanding area of (hilly) countryside for walks,
great views; and noted for the obelisk, erected in 1876
to the memory of Mark Philips of Welcombe,
which is visible for miles around.

Arthur Mee, in The King's England (1949), describes it thus:
"In [the chancel of Snitterfield church] lie five members of the Philips family.
It is to Robert Philips and his two sons that the great obelisk near by was set up;
we see it for miles round, for it rises 120 feet. Greatly these brothers loved each other.
Mark was born in the first year of the last century and Robert two days after Waterloo.
Both sat in Parliament. When his brother died in 1873 Robert set up the great
obelisk as a tribute to his brother and their father, of whom we are told
that he was a good, wise, and brave man...."
