David, I was honored to drill in the Army Reserve Center named after your grandfather The building on Gorge Boulevard was the Headquarters for the 3d Battalion 92d Field Artillery and later the 762d Transportation Company . We often laid wreaths in his honor at a small cemetery across from St. Thomas Hospital. When the Artillery battalion was inactivated, I believe we offered the plaque with COL Schaffner’s picture and bio to a family member. I drilled there for 24 years before being assigned to another Reserve unit in Cleveland. I really enjoyed the article and learning more about this Akron hero.

Thank you for this wonderful tribute. I teach at Bucknell University and I am running a Bucknellian in World War I project. Indeed, our group visited a haunting and beautiful St. Hubert's Pavilio, where Colonial Schaffner earned his Medal of Honor, and paid hommage to Bucknellians Baker Spyker, Charles O'Brien (in the same battalion as Schaffner), and Wlliam Acheson, all of whom fell in France. Am a member of the Medal of Honor Historical Society. For historical purposes, can you divulge the location of Dwite's actual Medal of Honor? We have located hundreds of the Medals to properly document Medal locations and assist in preventing them from falling into unscrupulous hands.

Dave-Thanks again for the walk down memory lane. Grandpa died when we were very young but I remember him coming up to kiss us good night with his uniform on. What a wonderful legacy he left us. Joy, Mary Ann Winget, cousin.
