A pleasant side trip from Madaba, just 9 km away at an altitude of 800 m.
The view here sweeps over the entire valley of Jordan as far as the Dead Sea. For according to the Bible, this is the very mountain Yahveh told Moses to climb so that he could see the Promised Land before dying, a land he was forbidden to enter, and it is here that Moses was then buried.
Although the exact location of the burial site is the subject of conjecture, a cross signs the spot chosen to commemorate his dealth. On the presumed site of his tomb a monastery was built.
