Madaba is best known for its superb and historically significant Byzantine-era mosaics. It is less than an hour by car from Amman, via the King's Highway. The centre of the town is St George's Church; unearthed in 1884, the mosaic on the church floor was a clear map with 157 captions (in Greek) of all major biblical sites from Lebanon to Egypt, and down to the Mediterranean. Only one-third of the original mosaic has survived.
