Apricot Ending
Sometimes I have to go no further than my front walk in order to enjoy nature's paintbrush.

Day 1 Double Star Sunrise.JPG
Shot at Wykcliff Country Club in Holyoke, MA shortly after 7:00am. The trees provide a diffraction which in this case created a double of the sun. As a result, TWO 14 point stars, one large and dominant; one small but stil there.
The photo was manually composed and shot using Nikon's 50mm f/1.4D AF lens.

Foggy Sunrise Over Connecticut River - Holyoke MA
Was heading out to catch early light one day in the summer of 2009, only to find a thick bank of fog from the Connecticut River masking the trees of a shoreline park, and through the fog, the glowing disk of a subdued sun. I've got severl shots of like of this brief visage....this the one I most like.

Spectacular Spring Sunrise
Was changing into my running clothes the other morning when I notice the sun just beginning to peek through the trees I see from bedroom window. I ran downstairs, grabbed my camera and a my 70-300mm lens and ranback upstairs. The window was none too clean, but I knew I had no time to spare, so I moved close to the pane and shot from there. Considering, I think it turned out quite well.

2007 Fall Meeting -003.jpg
This windmill sets next to the highway north out of Oberlin. Not the kind of thing one normally expects to see in Ohio. I was driving from my motel to shoot on the Oberlin campus when I saw this and just had to shoot it.

Poles at Sunrise - Lyman Street.jpg
I got up very early one morning to photograph by the fishway in Holyoke, MA and while driving there in the semi-dark, I ventured down Lyman Street and topping a slight rise, was presented with this scene. One of my favorite pictures. No PP.

20080111-06-layered sunset.JPG
An abnormal temperature inversion created this interesting early January shot of clear sky above, cloud layer below, over the town of Easthampton, MA. As shot from Mount Tom.

Skydiving at Sunset Off Mt. Tom 027.jpg
Just days after receiving my D50 I was driving home from Easthampton, MA when I got to the cliffs on the backside of Mount Tom. I suddenly realized a bunch of skydivers had just left the top of the mountain. Looking around, I saw a field that would be their likely landing spot, drove there, and parked the car. The paragliders flew west off the mountain, circled around, and came in to land from west-to-east, yielding this perfect shot. No PP other than a crop to square.

Wedding 'Morrow.jpg
Chance dinner at a seaside resort in West Dennis, MA on the eve of a big wedding presented this opportunity for a shot (a few actually). The light was fading so fast that by the time I left the dining room, retrieved my D50 from the car, and ran around to the shore it was almost dark. Got down on my belly and crawled under a porch to get this hand-held shot. Photo was badly underexposed as a result of the poor light and needed severe noise reduction....still, a once-in-a-lifetime.

Now the day is done.jpg
While taking the Wedding 'Morrow shot, I saw this volleyball pit further down the beach and managed to get one shot in. As with Wedding 'Morrow, the light had almost dissappeared and I was forced to badly underexpose and then use heavy noise reduction. But it has a nice "day is done, night is drawing nigh" feel to it, since beach volleyball is such an obvious daytime activity.

First Light.jpg
By chance up before sunrise one morning, I saw the very first red tinge on this wonderful cloud formation, reflected as well in the windows of other apartments in the complex. The shot is not sharp....I framed and shot quickly and did not futz with the settings..the light changed literally by the second and within one minute the magic was gone.

Less than a minute later
One of the pleasures of shooting dawn or sunset is how ephemeral the color and light patterns are. AS an example, this picture followed the previous one by somewhere between 30secs and a minute....but the sky has already brightened and the character of the red coloring has begun to change.

South Hadley churches in early light.jpg
South Hadley, MA churches shot across the Connecticut River shortly after sunrise one clear autumn morning. Mist was rising off the river, and the birds were circling looking for food. The soft golden sunlight on the steeples and the gradations of contrast and intensity in the foliage make this one of my favorite photos.
