KOFU—Snow covered the peak of Mount Fuji for the first time this season on Oct. 23, 21 days later than average, the Kofu Local Meteorological Office said.
A light white dusting was visible from the city after temperatures near the summit dipped below freezing overnight, the office said.
The snowcap follows an intensely hot summer. On average, such snow first appears on Japan’s tallest peak on Oct. 2.
But this season’s dusting is still ahead of last year’s Nov. 7 snowcap—the latest date recorded in 130 years of observation.
