August 8, 2025
The boxing world is in mourning after Japanese fighter Shigetoshi Kotari tragically passed away following complications from a brain injury sustained in his August 2 bout.
Kotari, who fell unconscious after a grueling twelve-round battle with Yamato Hata on August 2 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, never regained consciousness.
He was immediately rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma, a condition caused by bleeding on the brain.
Reports state that medical staff operated on both Korati and Hata in Japan after the hellacious contest.
Sadly, despite the surgery and the collective hopes of the boxing community, Kotari succumbed to the injury days later. The announcement of his death marks another tragic reminder of the sport’s unforgiving nature.
A promising career cut short
Kotari, born in Nagoya, Aichi, campaigned in the super featherweight division. He turned professional in October 2019 and built a record of 8 wins, two losses, and two draws, with five wins coming by way of knockout.
He competed for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Super Featherweight title, with judges carding a split decision draw against Hata after twelve hard-fought rounds.
The scorecards read 115-113 Hata, 114-114, and 113-115 Kotari.
Much loved on the Japanese scene, Kotari trained alongside and sparred with pound-for-pound star Junto Nakatani. He had established a loyal following through his grit and humble demeanor.
His final moments in the ring were a testament to his warrior spirit, pushing through until the end before a devastating injury unfolded.
The World Boxing Organization paid tribute to Kotari, whose death is another timely reminder of boxing’s continuous dangers.
“Rest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari,” said the WBO. “The boxing world mourns the tragic passing of Japanese fighter Shigetoshi Kotari, who succumbed to injuries sustained during his August 2nd title fight.
“A warrior in the ring. A fighter in spirit. Gone too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, team, and the entire Japanese boxing community.”
World Boxing News extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and team of Shigetoshi Kotari.
The bell tolls one final time for a fighter who gave everything to the sport he loved.
