Montecerboli is named after Cerberus, the dog who was believed to guard the hell's gate.
In the past the valley in the background was regarded as the gate to hell because of the
heat, steam and sulphur smell in that area. Today that place is named Larderello and has
become the world's most efficient geothermal energy plant, with megawatts of electrical
power and heating for the surrounding villages.
