Joop's Dog Log - Thursday June 03

This is the boat harbour in the old fishing village Zoutkamp,
in the high north of Groningen, not far from the Waddensea.
It`s not a real fishing village anymore. The Dutch reclaimed the `Lauwersmeer` in 1969,
and now new land separates Zoutkamp from the sea, and the fishermen have all moved to other ports.
But once a year there`s a big celebration in Zoutkamp.
It`s when the new herrings are brought on land,
the `Dutch New` as the herring catch is called here.
The fish is taken to Zoutkamp for the celebration.

Humans eat their Dutch New herrings raw.
They cut off the heads and take out the guts of the herrings,
pick them up by their tails, and slide them into their mouths.
I saw my humans do it yesterday.
It`s not a pretty sight...

Hve you, Joop? Tried it, I mean? I gotta say, it doesn`t sound very appetising to me. Oh well, can`t mess with tradition!

Hallo Joop. Zo de haringvangst gaat weer beginnen he.
Knuffel Dien.

Hey Joop, didn`t you try to eat the `Dutch New`? You should see B, P & Z on Saturday when they eat raw salmon with rice and spinach! btw: I`ve created a special diet for the pack on your advise: blanched green beans with low fat yoghurt and garlic powder - yummy :) :) Hardy & K-pack

Mahlzeit, Joop...hm, reading the first words we thought you be be telling us about those WONDERFUL DELICIOUS SUPER YUMMIIEE Dutch Matjes our bosslady is totaly addicted to......the Germans do eat little smoked "Sprotten" with head and tail and bones, but not raw. We tasted some of the dead fish left by the fishers at the beaches and alongside the chanel - not that bad, but stinky old, no fresh material! We think you do not need to worry, your human does it and he is still alive and obviously not seriously damaged.Such celebrations are DOG`s days, put that special look on your face and they will offer you the real tasty things....

"I hope you don´t have bad dreams about headless and gutless raw herrings, Joop.
So... are you saying humans filled up Zoutkamp´s sea port with earth in order to move it to some other place? It´s amazing how humans enjoy playing around with nature, isn´t it? We´ve talked about filling lakes up with earth before, do you remember? Brazilians and Dutch do it for totally different reasons, I know. Brazil is not at all a small country. So, I guess Brazilians enjoy playing God themselves... " Magali

yah... herring sushi... gotta be yummy. I knew a dog who would go to the beach with her humans, steal clams from the seagulls and eat them. Our cats love sushi, but turn their wee noses up at canned cat food if it contains fish. go figure. Happy festival, Joop, you handsome dog...

Hmmm, Joop. I think that might be an acquired taste. Of course, Flint thinks most things are an acquired taste -- if he can acquire it, he`s certainly going to taste it! Thanks to you and Henk for the b-day wishes! And happy Dutch New to you -- you are certainly a handsome sight in front of those colorful boats!

Joop, when we were living on the beach in Florida, we would watch our mom buy fresh local oysters to eat raw. And yet, she would yell at us if we tried to eat dead fish on the beach! Humans sure are funny, huh? Love, Heather

It is not a pretty sight, but it sure tastes good! Why don`t you ask your humans to give you a little of it to try?? The problem is if you like it...
Good night my friend, see you tommorrow, perhaps with some good news around here...
Take care! Oliver & Co.

Joop - I can't believe you don't like herrings! Or perhaps you're just upset 'cause you didn't get your share? If you need some tips on the fine art of begging, just ask me - McTavish.
