Joop's Dog Log - Wednesday Apr 14

These past three days 260.000 young seals were killed in northern Canada.
Humans want their skins.
Most of the seals were just babies. Some were shot, most were clubbed to death,
because the hunters get a better prize for seal skins without bullet holes.
Dutch TV showed seals that were being skinned alive.
The Canadian gouvernment has decided that, up till the year 2006,
a total of 975.000 seals may be killed. That`s a record number.
There are too many seals and they eat too much fish, these government humans say.
The commercial seal hunt causes big protests and outrage in some European countries,
just like it did in the 1970s,
and there`s a strong call for a boycot of all Canadian seal fur.

In my country a seal is called a `zeehond` or `sea dog`.
Not far from my town, in Pieterburen village, there`s a seal shelter for sick and weak seals
that are picked up by boats on the Waddensea: http://www.pbase.com/image/27943021
The seals get treatment there and then they return to the sea.
So in one country they heal and protect seals. And in another country they are clubbed to death.
Tell me how the human mind works.
It makes me really, really, really angry.

Club sandwiches, not baby seals!

I despise the people who buy the seal fur. That can`t all possibly be ignorant of the process it took for them to wear that skin. damn their spoiled guts!

It`s a ugly thing, but then, human kind does a lot of truly ugly things.

In addition to the insensitive fur-coat buyers, I can`t imagine how hard the killer`s hearts must be to do that kind of slaughter. People can be so extreme; loving & tender or take pain & suffering to its furthest reaches. Contempt for all things living

It makes me sad and angry too Joop. But I couldn`t help laugh loud after reading the last line of your caption. `Club sandwiches, not baby seals.`

Well, Joop, I cannot blame the Canadians, but I sure can blame the bastards that do this. I don`t care how hard it is to make money. Some things just shouldn`t be done. Period. Exclamation point. If the seal populations are too great, find some way of slowing down reproduction. Hire some of the hunters to catch boy seals and sterilize them. Give birth control implants to some of the female seals. Oh, and I can sure as hell blame the Canadian Government too! Idiots!

I`ve been feeling very angry, helpless and depressed about this too Joop, I`m glad you have said something about it, I find it very hard to articulate my feelings on the subject of the way animals are treated. Just as Barcelona goes on my list of places to visit one day, Canada gets crossed off!

Good Morning Joop! Sometimes I think that my family is from another planet: grown up with the environmental protection movement, caring for all kinds of living creature, the forests and "figthing" against pollution it always went without saying never to buy or wear fur from any kind of animal, never buying or using exotic wood, drinks in cans, agressive cleaning stuff, medicine and so on .....I had to accept that in many brains, regrettably those of young people, all these things never found a place and all these positive thoughts never reached them. Having fun and spending money from any source puts this generation on the same level as the generation of my parents.....sometimes I feel as if I am from another planet......nevertheless, Joop, hugs for you on this sunny Wednesday and take good care of your human! Love from Dany

You would not believe, joop, how hard one has to look to find any news story about this in the U.S. More often that anyone should have to be, I am ashamed to be human.

It is the same old sad story. Too many humans thinking that they have some divine right to everything on the planet. Instead of living in harmony with each other and the world around us, the majority of folks feel the need to rule and control. Humans are ruining this planet.

And the government even gives an approximate number of seals that will die till 2006... What a shame!!!! I do feel very upset when I hear things like you wrote and nothing can be done... Marina

Like ronni above, this story has NOT been our news either! How shocking that it is all over Europe. Here is what the government is saying to justify it allhttp://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/seal-phoque/report-rapport_e.htm Bunch of bureaucratic GDG (gobbledygook)

Last night on the news I saw one of the seals being beat...it is so hard to watch. People assume that if a being is not human, it has no feelings or sensibilities. Think how afraid and sad that animal is as he is being beat to death...it makes me shudder to think of the grief we cause animals in this world.

Although the Canadian government attempts to justify this type of action by saying there is a need to lower the number of seals, I have never agreed with the way that this takes place, it is cruel and abusive. Is the justification alright, only because the seal are not domesticated animals. Sometimes I am embarassed to be Canadian.

Joop, it`s such a horrible, sad thing. The humans can do some awful things sometimes. Maybe the world`s lament will make Canada rethink this policy ... although it`s too late this year ... The photographer human is getting better -- mostly back and neck discomfort, but she says she`ll be back in the woods with me again soon.

I wish we could divert the seals to your homeland. Here in Indiana we have to many deer people with guns come and shot them. They say there are too many deer and they starve if there is no hunting. Why don`t we work with a birth control method instead of murder. How can someone club someone to death? The inhumanity is so awful. I have not seen the gruesome event on TV, but my moms remember the 70`s horror. You look like you are hanging your head in shame, I feel like that, too.

It's so sad that humans have to behave in such ways. Thanks for the insight Joop.

Nations are not to blame, Humans make the nations Joop, the whole human thing is a bad thing, i wish i was a dog sometimes!

There are some horrific things done to non-humans the world over. One has only to read the various animal protection reports. I often feel that if human youngsters were taught to respect ALL living things, this world may be better all round! Max.

Oh, honey, I'm sad to hear this. I can't blame Canada for it, as I know so many wonderful Canadians!! Governments often do asshole types of things that the PEOPLE don't agree with. I know this as I live in the USA....and I am constantly frightened by OUR leader!! I love the seals, I'll see what I can come up with through research to hlep. There must be groups!???

I couldn't agree more... Geezzzzzzzz...
