Joop's Dog Log - Tuesday Apr 06

This is a test.
Humans, please take a good look at the blacks and whites of my fur.
I`m keeping my nose and my ears and my eyes out of the frame,
so you won`t be distracted.
How do my blacks and whites grab you? Do they bring on a special feeling?
I`m asking you this because my human read a theory by Dutch writer-biologist Midas Dekkers.
He claims black and white animals -especially the ones with spots-
attract humans more than other animals do.
Black and white animals look especially cute and domesticated in the human eye,
Midas says, they melt human hearts. He believes that is why Dalmatians are so popular.
And the psychological effect goes beyond pets.
Wild black and white species, like Penguins and Panda bears, also seem extra cute and lovable
to humans, although they can in fact be very unpleasant company for your average human.
So is it true: do humans prefer black and whites?
Hey, this a tough one for me. I really like many yellow and red and grey and blonde dogs too.
Some of my best friends are brown!
But us dogs are colour blind of course....

Good morning Joop,
I don`t believe this theory. I like the brown ones most because they give a warm feeling. And you Joop gives me a warm feeling not because your color but because your kind and smart character. Dalmatians are popular because the movie I think. And I also don`t believe that you dogs are color blind. You maybe have another spectral sensitivity.

Well I must admit I am partial to black and white dogs and think that they (we) are the most smart and beautiful.
However how could anyone deny that a brown dog like a Dachsund is cute and a soft yellow Lab is cute and appealing to humans? And what about koalas which humans seem to think are extra cuddly and cute but are not black and white at all?
This theory sounds a bit weird to me, Joop.
Love from Dottie--SO GLAD YOU ARE BACK HOME AND BACK HERE!

Interesting theory, buddy. I know my moms really like black and white photography. You are very endearing. Surely is is more then skin deep.

Dalmatians have too many spots; you`ve got exactly the right number. I admire your appearance because you have excellent posture & always, always seem to be very clean, whether you`ve bathed or not. All that aside, I might vote for the b&w theory. Zebras, Joop, others...it`s a potent visual combo!

Goedemorgen JOOP.
Nou op zo`n mooi slank lichaam zal menige hond jaloers zijn denk ik. Zo te zien wordt jij goed verzorgt door je baasje. Fijne dag nog.

Moin Joop,...and some of our best friends are black and white....thanks for request - no our male human has no problems with his stomach, but - you know - some man are suffering soooo much sometimes from don`t know what....well those statistics...Uncle Knuddel is right: just to be black and white isn`t enough - think of the cows we have here - there are other theories that say that people like round baby-faces and that is why breeds like Mopses etc. are so famous....humans and their special preferences - this is a large field! For us it is nice to have a friend with such a fine character and intellect combined with such a fur...what can we wish else? We do also know that dogs are able to see colours , maybe a little different to human beings, but in a larger range. Soulmate`s pats from your white/brownies B&P

"Hmmm... interesting, Joop. I´d love to know more about this Dekkers´s theory. What I can tell is that black and whites draw our attention to shapes because we´re not distracted by colours... Now I remember Magali prefers black dogs to any other dogs. I wonder what that means too?
PS.: It seems your humans enjoy their holidays :)" Luciana

Cool, Joop, I hadn`t realized your human was back. Welcome back, Henk! About this black and white theory: one thing I have definitely noticed has to do with cats, which may not interest you greatly. Anyway, I`ve noticed that all the black and white boy cats are clowns. Something in their nature leads them to want to entertain humans. There, feel free to quote me.

welcome back Joop! About the black and white preference, we have a preference for black and white felines, but at the moment the four cats are multi colored. Black and white Holstein cows became a sort of cult image for a while in this country. Then of course, there is the yin yang symbol...

Henk, glad you are back! Joop, you are so beautiful and handsome. Also, on equine group, there is a horse named Picasso, and his markings and your markings remind me of each other. It is said that when looking at a photo the human eye goes right to the white place/places. When I see a photo of you in the fall colors, my eye goes right to you, then your lovely surroundings and then back to you. Montana, my cat, is black & white, but that was because he was friendly and cute, and because all the black & white or plain black ones at the human society were on sale for half price. That means they had an overload of those colors. Of course you could say that is because people didn`t pick them as often, or you could say that is because So many people picked them and let them breed, that there was an overpopulation. Who knows? I love black and white animals, but my favorite dog of all time was an Irish Setter. Go figure! Anyway, you are strikingly handsome!

I don`t know, Joop, I would have to think about that theory awhile, but my first inclination is to say that I hope we all are way beyond looking at color first...it`s the heart that`s important.

That`s an interesting theory. Most of the cats and dogs I have owned have been black, or a mix of black-and-white. So you might be onto something!
Welcome back, Joop and Henk!!!

I think there`s something to it. People really like "tuxedo" cats, and black-and-white horses like your pals there. I will say, however, that you`re looking very fit and trim in this shot. Obviously a good balance of cookies to green beans!

Joop, what an interesting idea! I do think that penguins and pandas are very cute, and they are often featured in children`s TV shows. I used to have a black and white cat... my dogs have all been black. What about zebras? I guess that`s for camouflage.

You know, Joop, being a horsey person, the FIRST thought I had was a black and white "paint" or "pinto" horse, and YES they are the most popular colored horses hee at the moment, and very hard to breed. lots of red/white and brown/white, but not black/white.
Your markings are beautiful. Our Tia is 1/2 Dalmatian but looks almost all Dalmatian (smaller spots, more like freckles) and attracts a LOT of attention. more than my Tasha Belle!
Ah yes, and black and white Siamese cats too! And Zebras! Very smart people here, Joop!

I'm sure Bruiser would like it. It's an interesting theory. I'll show it to Bruiser when I get back home and see what he thinks. http://www.pbase.com/jengle/bruisers

Great to see you up and running again. My family have just returned from holiday and they have been kind enough to collect me today. I have been in kennels, but it's fine for a short while. They tell me that in comparison to mutts on the Caribbean Islands, I am truly fortunate. It's good to be in the old, familiar place with the old familiar duvet! Max :-)
Guest 06-Apr-2004 16:50
Well, my terrier Rufus is white with black spots and he's the cutest thing on 4 legs, so there may be something to the theory.
Guest 06-Apr-2004 08:14
Hmmm, I shall turn all my pictures black and white, and see what happens!
Guest 06-Apr-2004 06:45
I do agree that you have some lovely spots there Joop, however my Daddies think that my subtle grey colors make me look as soft as I feel. Now that you've brought this theory to my attention I will keep an eye on my Daddies to see how they react to others animals.http://www.pbase.com/image/27089115
