Joop's Dog Log - Sunday Mar 14

Shopping on a Sunday.
Not so many years ago that was impossible in my country.
Shops were open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm or 6pm, and Saturday mornings. That was it.
Then Saturday afternoons were added. Then they changed the hours to 8am - 8pm on weekdays.
Then they introduced 'shopping Sundays'.
But now the tide is turning.
Most Dutch humans stuck to the old shopping hours and most stores are deserted on the extra hours.
Also not many Dutch humans buy their stuff on a Sunday. So a lot of shops are going back to the old routine.
This could be our last shopping Sunday. That`s fine with me.
As long as my humans keep a good stock of cookies!

That`s nice, having a day that`s not devoted
to stress & commerce (unlike here)!

Moin Joop, Güster has always been different....being a holiday region where half of the inhabitants only come on weekend the little village store/postoffice/Lottostation has always been open on Sundaymornings. We never accompany our humans on shoping tours and I think bosslady only likes shops with dog-boring articles like books, music cds, shoes, trousers, flowers...she always tells us that she doesn`t want to be accompanied by impatient males.Supermarkets are mostly opened during the week from 6.00 to 8.00, but people can not spend the money they do not have in their pocket...we go out with bosslady today...fine sunny spring...will show you!

Yah, Joop, it seems strange to me too. Used to be that people did most of their shopping on the weekends. I mean, yr home, not working. But now it seems the stores are getting close to empty on Sundays. I wonder if there`s any correlation to the increased interest in attending religious services that happened after 9-11. For that matter, I wonder if church or synagogue or temple or whatever attendance is still up. No clue! So far as I know, dogs don`t have an organized religion. If they do, I bet they keep it private. Yet another reason I think dogs have it way over humans.

you can shop any day, any hour here in sydney. many corner stores are open 24/7, and even some supermarkets are open 24hrs. it`s a bit uneccessary if you ask me (except maybe for shift workers and pot-heads). the funny thing is, when i visit the little town i grew up in i get annoyed that things are closed so early and so often. i`m getting a little too accustomed to "civilisation" i think ...

Shopping is very important and we are not going to be happy unless our humans can do it and do it well. For instance, I actually prefer pork tenderloins to cookies, any day, myself. Love, Dottie

I think in America, it is the opposite! We all shop on Saturday and Sunday. :-) Well, you still look handsome there, with all of the shopping carts!
I like you, Joop! It`s very late in Seattle, so I must say goodnight now... Have a great Sunday!

Chloe Bear likes to shop and go everywhere the humans go and always gets a cookie for being such patient girl. Many people here like to do their weekly shopping on Sunday. Joop, you look like a seasoned shopper.

It is so interesting to hear about your life, and to see what things we have in common. Also, I am thinking you are more handsome each day---that`s fine, but what do you SMELL like? Sarah.

Very interesting. But you may right. Shopping on sunday I think is for the tourists only a good thing. I want to rest or do something interesting on sundays.
And Joop, did you find the long legged woman? :) Hardy & the K-pack

Hello Joop, hey, don`t tell DKB that those laces are "nice"...they are only secret-under-cover- laces for the old dog`s walk boots she loves so much and will never give away.Once they were ment for tennisshoes , but turned out much too long and much too shocking-yellow.We never tried how they do in the dark, cause we never go out in the night...maybe they remind her of the flower-power-times....hope you had a fine extended walks with your people in the sun too and everybody in your family is doing allright!

We talk with the vet today (she was visiting Billy! :), she said something similar. We should try to give Billy the food earlier on the day.
Let`s try it. :) Hardy

Not all shops are open on Sundays here (there are two dog treat shops in town now, and neither of them are open on Sunday!), but most of the big supermarkets are open every day of the week.
It`s funny that you posted a shot with shopping carts - today is the anniversary of the patent for the shopping cart! According to Saveur magazine, an Oklahoma City grocer named Sylvan Goldman designed a "basket carriage" in 1936 and it was patented March 14, 1938.

Nice photo of you Joop. Did you help organize those carts so neatly? I like the cart shed, or house or whatever you call the storage area. Makes a nice photo, too! You are too cool going to the store and the like. Did you see on our log that we went for a walk today? It was the first time since my humans surgery on Halloween! She thought to you and brought her camera just like your human!
