Joop's Dog Log - Thursday Mar 11

I'm looking back today.
Things are changing fast in my country.
Only two or three years ago The Netherlands was one of the most liberal,
most tolerant and most prosperous countries in Europe.
We had good health care, we were rather nice to refugees, the economy was humming like a bee,
most humans were satisfied with their life and nobody was hungry or left without assistance.
But the wind has changed. The economy slowed down. Many workers lost their jobs.
Large numbers of humans turned against foreigners,
and many of the foreign refugees had to leave our country.
Big cuts were made in the health care system and the social services.
There were violent incidents that shocked everybody. A politician was murdered in cold blood.
Even the supermarkets started a war.
And there were scandals in our Royal Family.
We're still a good country, compared to some others.
Our humans are nice to dogs. But we better not let it slide any further.
It has to stop here. That’s what I say when I look back.
Have a nice day everybody!

You brought tears to my eyes, Joop
Let's get together, you, me and all the wondeful humans of the world, and not let the bad ones win

You`re looking so handsome again today, Joop! Do you ever have a bad-hair day? I think NOT!

Scary world sometimes, I agree, Joop. It doesn`t feel like it was all that long ago when we took a stand in the sixties, convinced we`d change the world. And we did! It just never occured to us that it might not be forever. And so now I wonder if I have enough in me left for the big fight to come. This feels as tho it`s it, this election year. We can make the world the decent, caring place we believed it should be, or we can let it all go to the greedy, the selfish and the thoughtless. And we`re all in this together, Joop. Oh, we maintain our own countries, but it`s the whole world that matters now. So take a deep breath, my friend. We`ve got the future to fight for! Surely worth all our attention. So shine up yr collar and comb yr hair, Joop, cuz we need everyone for this one.

also agreed, joop. anyone who looks at you must see what a righteous dog you are : )
almost exactly the same things could be said about australia (thankfully no assassinations here ... touch wood). what happened to the world to make things get so selfish, so fast? i`m not sure, "i don`t know" could be a mantra for me ... i do know that i don`t like the way things are heading either.
i`ll gratuitously quote myself: "In a world where freedom of choice obscures the loss of real freedom - the diminishing influence of the individual among the masses - one of the few courses of action left is to bear witness to the world ..."
any suggestions for other courses of action are welcome.
(and i just remembered - please tell your human that another similarity between our countries must be the long shadows ... remember, australia is probably the only country in the world with more flat ground than the netherlands ; )

Moin Joop, seems our Bosslady isn`t already clear enough in her brain to follow your flashback, but her first reaction was : wow, how lucky those Dutch people are that things are only going down since 3 years...she told us that she felt a continuous process like that going on since 30 years...the first cut was the deepest: Mr. Willy Brand (SPD)promised us "Dare more democracy" and initiated the policy of detente....and it ended in the policy of Chancellor Helmut Schmid who signed the NATO-double-contract...bosslady decided then never elect nor to trust any SPD-government.What are nowaday`s people wondering about here in Germany?

I agree totally with the nannish one, couldn`t have said it better. Humans have always muddled through in the past. Let`s hope we will somehow prevail against the monsters this time, too.

That nannish one sure says things well. I think I am too doggone (excuse me Joop) tired for another big fight like we had in the 60s. This election in the U.S. is critical...and of course what happens here has a large rippling effect on the rest of the world. It is difficult to see what to do agains the well oiled and very heavily funded Republican machinery of bush and his cronies. If he wins, we are in big trouble, and I have a feeling the whole world will feel the pain.
Not too optimistic...Kerry has got to learn how to do a number of things, including wearing the label of `liberal` with pride...if he would look it up in the dictionary he would see it means open minded...and that is in sharp contrast to bush who is dull and incurious. He has also got to learn how to shorten his sentences...many people find them too laborious to listen to.
Anyway...just rambling, Joop, thanks for the soapbox and have a great day, you and your humans.

Yeah, and sometimes I complain about my country (Brazil). Where I live (south) is very industrialized and we have a good economy and just a few minors social problems. But in north of Brazil is where the main problem is located. Misery all over the places. Hunger families with no place to live, murders, robbery... anyways...i think all countries has their problems. All we got left is to help those around us and continuing living and doing something good for your community for a change...
I really hope that your situation on your country gets better! Elô.

An ill wind blows here, too, Joop. I guess we have to hold on tight to each other my friend. Hope our liberal leanings can help both of our worlds.

You`re right to take a stand, Joop. Things have gotten bad over here in the last few years, too. Let`s hope we can change things soon.
By the way, I had been chasing a deer. I got pretty hot after that and had to cool off!
