There was a lot of lightning during the powerful thunderstorm that hammered us on Thursday night. We think it might have struck this large tree and split it open. The entire street was blocked off to both auto and pedestrian traffic while a crane worked to remove the tree, part of which had landed on a nearby house.
I can’t even begin to describe the devastation on Capitol Hill — everywhere you go are fallen trees blocking sidewalks and streets, huge broken branches, damaged cars and houses, looking more like a war zone than a quiet neighborhood. The DC government has received 1,100 emergency requests to clean up downed trees and limbs across the city, which is simply unheard of here.
