The back of this rat-sized mammal was covered in small spines, much like those found on today’s hedgehogs, and it also grew hair like modern mammals. It lived in present-day Spain, which was a tropical wetland 125 million years ago. The model was made with palm fiber, coffee seeds acorn caps, roots, buckeye capsules, pine cone scale and driftwood root.
Taken at the US Botanic Garden’s annual holiday display, this year titled ‘Season’s Greenings: Dino-Mite!’. Model trains run on several tracks around the exhibit area.
