Postscript

This imprint in clay of Sahraa’s paw was sent to us by the company used by the animal hospital to handle the remains of deceased dogs. I asked Tim if he thought it was really her paw, and he said he’d know those nails anywhere.

But I wanted to describe the outpouring of sympathy that we’ve received since Sahraa’s passing, first and foremost from all her friends on Pbase, for which we are so very grateful. But then, much to my surprise, our next door neighbor with whom I’ve had a somewhat rocky relationship in the past and who puts out a community newsletter for our local park, sent out a special edition the night she died devoted entirely to Sahraa. He had pulled 13 photos from my gallery (I wasn’t aware he even knew about Pbase) and published them along with something I had written about her. I was touched by his thoughtfulness. Then on Saturday, Friendship Hospital for Animals, where she had been treated in the end, sent a huge bouquet of flowers in her memory. Even the delivery woman wanted to know about Sahraa; I said it would make me cry, and she said crying is good. On Monday we received a card of condolence with handwritten messages from the two internists who had cared for her at Friendship. If that weren’t enough, a group of maybe 50 dog-friend people from the park had signed a card expressing how much she’ll be missed, and a number of people sent emails saying the same.

It makes me sad to relate all this, but at the same time happy that Sahraa was so well liked, and I just wanted to share it with you.

Like other Pbase friends who’ve lost their fur babies, I might post a few more pictures of her that I found, one in particular that I really like taken at the first ER vet we visited that day.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly unsharp.

Helen, I am so sorry to read this. My presence on Pbase has been erratic of late and it's only this evening when I had some time to see what all my Pbase friends were doing, that I learned that you've said 'goodbye' to your trusted companion. She really had the most wonderful life with you both and was loved and cared for up til the end. Good night Sahraa.

Such an outpouring shows the positive influence that a dog, or any pet, can have on everyone and anyone. Sahraa obviously had a huge fan club and was greatly admired by all - how could she not be?. They are such an integral part of our lives and their loss leaves a gaping hole. The imprint is beautiful.

How thoughtful for them to provide you with a tangible keepsake memorial to remember Sahraa until you meet again at the Rainbow Bridge. Please do continue to post any photos that you have of your special girl when you can.

Sahraa has made many friends in her life. You said she liked to get pats from anybody willing and how wonderful that you've received so many condolences and kindness.

A heartfelt story. My sympathy for the loss of dear Sahara. Like Jane, I worked in the vet field for several years. They care, they hurt just like the owners do. What a gift she was to all of us here, Helen....

Extremely sad news Helen. From the numerous photos of Sahraa I could see that you were very fond of her. You have a beautiful memorial plaque on the wall.

What a genius idea, I would have asked the same question as you did and if Tom would tell me it is, then it is. You will cherish it for ever.

A beautiful keepsake. I can tell you from years of working with veterinarians how much they care for the animals they treat. They truly understand how much your pet means to you. How wonderful your neighbor put together a story about Sahraa. I was so lucky to get to meet Sahraa on two occasions and spend some time with her. She really was a dog who could bring people together. Thanks for sharing her with all of us Helen and Tim.
