Days long gone at the substation

Another section of mural at the Pepco substation. I must admit I don’t know who the musician is, but the “photograph” is of 4th Street SW from 1949, and I do know it looks nothing like that now. In fact, much of Southwest DC was demolished to make way for a freeway and urban "development." Such a pity to have lost all those old buildings.

*****

Local artists Kaliq Crosby and Rose Jaffe recently decorated the walls of a new Pepco substation in Southwest Washington with murals of DC icons Marvin Gaye, congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and famous statesman Frederick Douglas along with other beautiful images, some of which I’ll post individually.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

This one is alive with energy and your photograph conveys it quite well. Love the splash of sun lighting up the corner.

So this truly fantastic mural is not only beautiful, but a reminder of what was lost. It is such a shame to demolish old buildings, they are part of our history. V

I like how the artist worked in all blues for the street scene. V

4th st looked so funky back then, and the artists evoke that feeling very well...
