Circumcision procession in Izmir

A circumcision (sünnet) is always a big event in Turkey. The boy in the front car dressed in a traditional white Ottoman costume, complete with beaded crown, is on his way to the ceremony.

I’ve decided I should get back to this gallery after a break of almost two years. I still have a lot of pictures from our first assignment to Turkey, 1996-2000, before I had a digital camera, although armed with my trusty Sony was easily able to post pictures online in other galleries during our second tour there, from 2003 to 2006 (and beyond due to my working for a newspaper in Istanbul).

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

Oh my. I guess they don't do this when they are infants?? Yikes. I never would have imagined this to be an "event."
