This was the scene at the Mall – the heron and cormorants were all congregated on this island along the edge right of center and a bit further away from us than the last time we were there. Hardly anybody was fishing, just sunning themselves on this unusually warm winter day.

We stopped by the lake on the National Mall again to see if the heron had flown south. Much to our surprise, he was still there, along with quite a few cormorants, despite the bitterly cold weather we’ve had over the past week, although it was almost 70 degrees on that particular day (!).
I wasn’t too happy with many of the pictures I took – the Sony does well for zoomed close-ups but not so much for long distance bird shots, and I didn’t have a long lens with me for the D850 – but will post a few that I do like.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
