Union Pacific Depot, Salt Lake City, Utah (1909)

This train station features a grand hall, at each end of which are two murals, one of Brigham Young and the other commemorating the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah, in 1869, joining two railroads and creating the first transcontinental railroad in the US.

Among the many plant materials used to create this model, the windows are made from salt cedar, honeysuckle vine, bamboo, cedrela fruit, hickory nut shell, acorn caps, pine cone scales and anise fruit.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

*****

We went to the United States Botanic Garden’s Season’s Greenings exhibit titled “All Aboard,” which showcases historic train stations from around the country made almost entirely from plant materials.
