Convent (1880s), then museum (1980s), now Landmark Lofts

The Landmark Lofts at Senate Square is a condo building that was originally built as a convent, then morphed into a children’s museum before being developed as condos in 2008. From what I have read, original construction was in the 1880s.

This is an old picture I took of this place that I had to use because it’s now virtually impossible to photograph the building, with tram lines and a huge overhanging wire fence right in front of it. I was asking Tim why he thought the fence was there, and he said when the building was converted, the neighborhood was pretty unsafe. Now the H Street corridor is full of new businesses such as supermarkets and restaurants. What an amazing transformation, although I must say it’s still H Street to me.

Some interior pictures can be seen at http://www.condo.com/building/Landmark-Lofts-at-Senate-Square-Washington-DC-20002-4454009 and the prices listed must be old since there don’t seem to be any units for sale now.

A fine looking building, but I wonder who wanted to move in there when it was an unsafe neighborhood. A treat to see all these old buildings being re-purposed instead of torn down.

Such histories these buildings have! So many stories they must have seen. I like the look of this one.

Really interesting to learn the history of this quite imposing building. I think living here would beat living in new condos, but that's only because I like old buildings! V
