The sad state of the Jefferson Memorial

We finally decided to go down to the Tidal Basin today as the weather was spectacular, with a brilliant blue sky and a bright sun. Although half the cherry blossoms were destroyed by poor weather last month, some had survived, but many trees were past their peak. I wanted to go not just to see the floral display but to take a comparison photo for the one below, from 2009, before the Jefferson Memorial was attacked by a biofilm that is growing and can’t be destroyed. Such a pity because I always felt this particular memorial was the most beautiful in Washington.

In memoriam, The Jefferson Memorial (2009), posted earlier:

Nicely composed shot but amazing the difference since 2009. I wonder if the biofilm will damage the structure of the Memorial ? V

The difference is really startling. How sad! Great capture with all the boats and human activity. V

It has taken on the old and weathered look so fast!

a marked contrast...hopefully the biofilm affects just the appearance and not the structural integrity as well..

It is a shame that happened but it still is a beautiful building. I could stand there forever watching that scene. Very well captured. V
