Bridge over Anacostia channel

Tim came back yesterday morning from getting our car inspected (it passed!) and said that I wouldn’t believe the neighborhood he had just driven through, and indeed I didn’t. This is the Washington Navy Yard area, now called The Yards, which I had photographed years ago and where we had rented warehouse space. It was full of old buildings, mainly warehouses, although the Department of Transportation had built a huge headquarters there (we could never figure out why), but there was really not much else and not the best part of town to be in.

The place has simply blossomed, with restaurants and outside seating, trendy bars, a Harris Teeter supermarket, a riverside park, a pool and fountain for kids (but sadly not for dogs, poor Sahraa), a marina, apartments, condos, everything, and just fantastic. It was 90 degrees out and very humid, but we walked around anyway just marveling at how it had changed and become a great place to be and live. Oh, and Nationals Park is located there, too; that might have sparked this total upheaval of the neighborhood, located on the Anacostia River.

This modernistic bridge is situated at the other end of the pool (to the right) in the first picture and crosses the channel flowing into the Anacostia River, at left.

Fountain frolic, posted earlier.

I think you should open a dog park in DC. Fountains and grass for the dogs would be fun.
