We took a ride on the Portland Aerial Tram during our long stay there, something, like the Japanese garden, that we had never done before in all the many years we have been visiting Tim’s family in Portland. The tram travels a horizontal distance of 3,300 feet (1,000 m) and a vertical distance of 500 feet (150 m) in a ride that lasts three minutes, going from the South Waterfront neighborhood to OHSU Hospital. Although intended for commuters to the hospital, it is open to the public and has become quite a tourist attraction for great views of the city.
It wasn’t the smoothest trip for taking pictures with a big camera, especially when passing the intermediate tower in the distance, when the operator warned people to hold on (which turned out to be very good advice), but the panoramic vista from the hospital terminus was worth the bumpy ride.
