Rania Matar was born in Beirut and currently lives in the US. In her series A Girl and Her Room, she juxtaposes images of teenagers in the United States and the Middle East, revealing the universality of themes of developing identity.
The dyed-blonde Christilla [photographed in Rabieh, Lebanon] is curled up in a chair in front of a large blowup of Marilyn Monroe, and the pink of her wall is picked up in the accents of pink fingernail nails and a pink bra. The order of the carefully arranged DVDs coexists with the disorder of the scattered shoes on the floor.
