'This is Not in the Dream of Eastern Women'

This is one photograph in a series by Newsha Tavakolian of Tehran. It’s a bit complicated to explain, but basically after photographing some famous Iranian female singers who are not allowed to perform by themselves in public or produce recordings, she created imaginary album covers for each of them, featuring her sister in a variety of settings and named with poetic titles inspired by feminist Persian slogans.

I never have, nor will I ever be subservient to men. I can't even imagine living like that. I would commit suicide. It hard for me to look at pictures and hear stories like this.
